It was an early start so they could travel as far as possible before the heat of the day set in. Tom decided they would travel light. Just enough provisions for one overnight camp plus an axe to mark a trail. If the road was there, they should intersect it on the first day. The second would be to establish the best route for the proposed track.

They travelled north until they had skirted the shoreline of the waterway that led inland from Tom's property. Then it was a matter of heading west, to where Tom estimated the road should lie.
